Teachers at the American Language Centers enjoy a friendly, supportive working environment that helps them to facilitate their language classes effectively. They are part of the broader family of ALC’s which employ several hundred teachers and support staff throughout the Association. Centers are largely autonomously managed by the Center Directors who bring their own management style to each center.
There are centers in the largest cities as well as smaller towns in Morocco, from more modern seaside towns to cities with UNESCO world-heritage sites. There are no two ALC facilities that are alike. The ALC teachers are comprised of many nationalities including Moroccan, American, British, Australian, and South African just to name a few.
Teachers range in age, experience and just about every other factor you can imagine. All of this results in each ALC offering a unique work environment and a unique experience at each of our centers in Morocco, while still benefiting from the strength and support of the entire network of Centers. Moreover, The Association promotes and facilitates the exchange of ideas and resources between the centers and hosts an annual Association-wide teacher conference that serves as an opportunity for professional development as well as socializing with colleagues working around the country.
Finally, the ALCs share the same pedagogical philosophy. Namely, that a highly student-centered, communicative-based approach to language instruction best facilitates our students’ learning. The Centers strive to expose students to as much authentic language in context as possible and to provide constant opportunities to express themselves in their new language. The Centers expose students to an “American style” classroom rapport encouraging full participation in topics of interest that are relevant to our students’ needs. This methodology differs greatly from what the majority of students who come to us are used to and is part of what makes the ALCs so attractive to their clientele.
Visiting and non-Moroccan teachers also benefit from their teaching experiences at the ALC’s in that they learn about Morocco, its people and culture through exposure to not just to their Moroccan colleagues but also by getting to know their students and engaging them in conversation and discussion in the classroom and extension activities.
