Teaching in Morocco
American
Language Centers employ native speakers of English from abroad as well as
Moroccan teachers. Hiring practices vary considerably from one Center to
another and prospective teachers must contact the Center or Centers in which
they are interested. However, some general standards do apply.
Requirements :
Applicants must have an American B.A. or equivalent, and preferably a Master's
in TEFL or a related field. Preference is also given to applicants who have
completed a TEFL or TESL certificate course and/or have some practical experience in the teaching
of English as a Foreign or Second Language. A working knowledge of
Moroccan Arabic or French is also very helpful. Lastly, by Moroccan law, a
foreigner 60 years of age or older will not be issued a work permit to teach
in Morocco.
Contracts :
Many but not all of the ALCs in Morocco offer contracts for full-time
teachers which guarantee a fixed salary. The minimum
number of contact teaching hours may be from eighteen to twenty-four per week
depending on the location of the ALC and the form of the contract. In
addition to teaching, contract hours may include extra-curricular activities
(film or drama groups, workshops, etc.)
Pay :
Cost of living varies considerably from city to city and individual Centers'
pay scales reflect these differences. Salary levels are adequate to live
comfortably, but not extravagantly. Salaries are paid in Moroccan dirhams,
but foreign nationals may opt to have net salary, or a percentage thereof,
transferred to a foreign currency account either in Morocco or in the home
country. Moroccan income tax, which is fairly high by American standards,
is withheld from pay.
Benefits :
Full-time teachers are enrolled in a medical insurance plan for a nominal
contribution. The plan reimburses 80% of most medical and certain dental
expenses.
Some ALCs also help visiting foreign teachers with housing. Some maintain fully-furnished apartments available for a moderate rent, some offer housing subsidies and all have personnel well-versed in the tedious task of apartment hunting.
Other benefits that may be offered are email access, subsidized language lessons (Arabic, French, Spanish), and air fare reimbursement or repatriation.
Application Procedures :
Because application procedures differ from Center to Center, please
contact the ALC (s) to which you wish to apply directly. For a list of
